# Letting agents operate real Android: the Phones Cloud real-time control path

Agents do not need to understand an entire phone at once. They need reliable observation, action primitives, and result delivery through CLI, SDK, Relay, and Shell Extension.

Web automation can inspect a DOM. Android automation works with a live screen, touch coordinates, system keys, shell output, and APK lifecycle events.

That is the key difference between cloud phones and ordinary web APIs: a request does not simply update a record. It changes state on a real Android device. Agent-facing interfaces need to break that work into stable engineering primitives: observe, act, and return results.

## Start with observation

The first step for an agent is not clicking. It is knowing what state the screen is in. Phones Cloud exposes screenshots so the cloud phone screen can become input for a model, rule engine, or test runner.

The caller authenticates with an API key, selects a target by public device_id, then requests screenshots or device metadata. That makes real Android screens available to automated decision loops without requiring a person to watch the device.

## Keep actions small and deterministic

Reliable Android automation usually comes from small actions, not one oversized “finish the task” command. Phones Cloud exposes ADB-style actions such as tap, swipe, text, keyevent, shell, and install, while the agent chooses the next step.

This makes the system composable. A screenshot can lead to a tap, a text input, a shell query, or an APK install. Each action has clear inputs and a clear result, so failures are easier to isolate.

## Relay sends actions to the right device

A cloud phone is not a page that disappears after one HTTP response. It is a live set of media and control streams. Relay routes actions from the CLI, SDK, or console to the right device and waits for the corresponding result.

For shell, screenshot, and file-oriented extension work, control messages carry request identifiers. The server waits for the matching device response so concurrent control messages do not cross wires. That is what turns a live device into a programmable endpoint.

## Shell Extension controls execution boundaries

Device-side execution cannot be “run whatever arrives.” Shell Extension separates work into Immediate, Ordered, and Background queues: immediate work stays responsive, ordered work runs FIFO, and background work absorbs longer tasks.

The executor also handles timeouts, output-size limits, process cleanup, and global concurrency control. A long shell command should not hold device resources forever, and screenshots or interactive actions need clear response boundaries.

## Why this fits agents

Phones Cloud does not need to plan the agent’s entire business workflow. It needs to provide stable mobile execution primitives: observe the screen, choose an action, execute it, read the result, and continue.

When that loop is fast and predictable, a cloud phone becomes more than a remote screen. It becomes a real Android execution environment that automation systems can keep calling.

## Engineering takeaways

- Agent access starts with observation, action primitives, and result delivery.
- Small ADB-style actions make orchestration more flexible and failures easier to isolate.
- Relay and Shell Extension define the real-time control path and device-side execution boundary.
